Processing + Music + MIDI
Watch the video https://vimeo.com/37253640
This is a live music visualizer that takes any stereo input and outputs form and color based on the loudness of the music. It can be further controlled by a MIDI controller making it a great tool for playing along side a DJ like you see in this video.
Currently the sketch uses TouchOSC, an iPhone app that transmits OSC data and converts it to MIDI...

The Prophet - On Work by Kahlil Gibran
Then a ploughman said, “Speak to us of Work.” And he answered, saying: You work that you may keep pace with the earth and the soul of the earth. For to be idle is to become a stranger unto the seasons, and to step out of life’s procession, that marches in majesty and proud submission towards the infinite.

RhinoScript - The Generative Language
Wintersession at RISD is a special time, a 6 week intensive period for study with less distractions. I’m in the middle of a class called RhinoScript: There and Back.
It’s not easy to find very simple info on Rhinoscript online, so going into this class I didn’t really know what I was in for. I have worked with processing, another scripting language based in java, so I had some...

Resources for learning Python in 2012 - A...
I’ve compiled a list of the best resources I’ve found in the past few days for learning Python. I am just beginning exploring scripting languages. This list is meant for beginners...

Prince is fascinating
”Prince was set to release the album with a monochromatic black cover with only the catalog number printed, but after 500,000 copies had been pressed,[44] Prince had a spiritual epiphany that the album was evil and had it recalled.[45] It would later be released by Warner Bros. as a limited edition album in 1994. Prince went back in the studio for eight weeks and recorded Lovesexy.”

My first time turning on a lathe. One of the most exciting experiences so far this year. Spent all Friday (!) night doing it. Also makes for some beautiful footage. The assignment was to practice turning maple, by making two pieces that fit together. The piece you see in the video is definitely my weaker one of the night, but it’s no big deal. 30 mins of work condensed into 2 min! Enjoy.

Model Project
The assignment was to replicate an object at 2:1 scale using an assigned material. I was given Polystyrene Sheet plastic, and I chose a Minolta 460Tx Camera to replicate because of its box-like shape and fairly straight edges. The project was completed in 55 hrs.

Hacked
Just thought I should let you guys know I was hacked. I am somewhat shocked that it happened as I use the web very responsibly. It may have originated from a third party app that has access to some features on my account here on Tumblr.
The hacker/bot sent out a generic “check out my new blog” post with this url: timpview.provo.edu disguised as a tumblr url. Upon clicking, it sent...

“While [design schools today may have] sophisticated virtual design tools, the danger in relying on them too much is that we can end up isolated from the physical world,” he says. “In our quest to quickly make three-dimensional objects, we can miss out on the experience of making something that helps give us our first understandings of form and material, of the way a material...
